Training & Preparation

This is one of our more strenuous trips and is one that we do not recommend for those who are new to backpacking. Plan to carry a fully weighted backpack for 9 trail days without a resupply. It is essential to come prepared! To ensure the most enjoyable and successful experience out on the trail, we recommend a rigorous training plan leading up to your trip, focusing on:

  • Endurance, cardio, and aerobic activities
  • Core and leg strength (don’t forget those abs and quads)!
  • Day hikes or short overnight trips with a weighted pack (30-35lbs) to train for both the physical and mental aspects of backpacking
  • Cycling, running, step-master or stairs are great cross-training
  • Include hilly terrain and steep climbs whenever possible

Prior Experience

We strongly encourage having recent backpacking experience or practice before embarking on this section of JMT. The most successful people on these trips have completed several backcountry trips carrying a fully weighted pack (35-40lbs) for 3-5 days. If you do not have this experience, we recommend joining us on a “shake-out” trip prior to joining the Trans-Sierra Trail.

  • Dinner on the first night in Fresno and last night in Lone Pine
  • Recommended 10%-20% gratuity for guides

Trip Reviews

Fiona G, 2023

To summit and to cross the Sierras from west to east was a great achievement. More than that, it was great to fully immerse ourselves in the backcountry traversing different terrains: passing through towering pines, lush meadows, thundering rivers, beautiful flowers, various scents of the wild, boulders, snow and panoramic views.

Helping make the trip was the camaraderie among the group. And with our guides, Riley and Laurel, who were consummate professionals with everything from planning, safety, navigation, mountaineering skills, negotiating excessive snow melt in rivers and avalanche debris and cooking.

Wendee P, 2022

SYMG scouts out the most spectacular routes through the most remote areas - off the beaten track, the whole thing was special and breathtaking. Colby Pass was incredible! Riley was outstanding as our guide and he didn't just subtly take good care of us but he played his guitar on trail and at camp, prepared the most delicious meals, and prepped us to feel confident, challenged and independent, which has helped prep me for planning my own solo back country trips today. I owe SYMG my gratitude for new skills, confidence, and deeper appreciation for stewardship of the planet. Thank you SYMG!!!

Randal G, 2016

The trip itself was more rewarding than I ever imagined. The varied terrain, flora and fauna of this route was truly magical. Though it wasn't the sole reason for my attraction to the TST trip, we did have favorable weather and were able to make our way up Mt Whitney on day six. It was exhilarating to experience the sunrise as we made our way to the top. But without doubt, the best part of the trip for me personally was the expert guidance from Alex Kendrall and Nick Robinson. These two young men were consummate professionals from the initial group meeting the night before departure and throughout the entire journey across the Sierra Nevada. Safety, followed very closely by our enjoyment of the trip and educating us about the land were obvious priorities. And the cooking was absolutely incredible - something I think all of us looked forward to each night. I look forward to joining these two fine men on a future trip - a joy to be in their company. I was anticipating good things from SYMG and you guys delivered on all counts. Thank you very much for a memorable and safe trip in the mountains.
