A Few More Notes

Travel & Logistics

This trip begins and ends in Bass Lake, CA. Plan to check in at the hotel after 4pm. You will meet your guides and group for your trip orientation at the South Gate Brewery in Oakhurst, CA. Transportation is not included in this departure, so you will need your own vehicle to get to the Pines Resort as well as driving to and from the trailhead. We’ll return to Bass Lake between 2-3pm.

About the packstock

Mules will be carrying all of our equipment and your personal gear into the basecamp. We will not be hiking with the mules- they we pass us on the trail, arriving to camp before us to drop off our gear and return back to their pack station. You will need to pack your personal belongings (not including tent, sleeping bag & pad) efficiently into one mid-sized compression sack or duffel as outlined in our pre-trip materials, weighing no more than 20 pounds. You are welcome to pack anything extra in your daypack.

Training & Preparation

This is designed as a beginner-friendly experience. While we recommend putting in time to prepare for your trip, we often have people that are newer to backpacking join us.

We still recommend getting outside before your trip to hike in the shoes or boots that you plan to wear and feel comfortable with your personal clothing and gear. If possible, it’s also a great idea to do some hikes with a weighted pack on to prepare well.

  • Personal clothing & footwear
  • Dinner on the first night in Fresno
  • Recommended 10-20% gratuity for guides and 3% for packers

Trip Reviews

Karen G, 2016

Wow--the maiden voyage of Ales & Trails was a huge success! Thank you for all of your hard work to make this such a special trip. We all had so much fun at such a beautiful location and loved the excellent hiking. Everything was impeccably planned, and I greatly appreciate your thoughtfulness and creativity in accommodating the various eating restrictions (especially when you had a pescatarian and a gluten-free); the food was nothing short of fantastic!

Chuck F, 2020

Food was incredible. Our Guide Connor running back over a ridge to start slow cooking meat through rain and a couple bouts with hail with final prep under a tarp in a hail storm resulted in one of the best meals I had. These guys know how to adapt, improvise and overcome.

Kathy K, 2013

I want to thank you for organizing the Nichols trip to Ansel Adams wilderness for us. Although Hal and I were very excited for this adventure we were also apprehensive never having done such a trip before. Ryan and Christina the two guides you provided for our group were superb! Their expertise in guiding the group was evident on all levels! They knew the mountain and led us at a pace that we could all be challenged yet safe. As the weather and terrain changed they continued to assess our group abilities and kept us safe yet challenged. The food was prepared at a chefs level and their camaraderie with our group just enhanced our groups dynamics and enjoyment. They were thoroughly professional the entire time enabling us to enjoy the wilderness and physical exhilaration while being guided in competent hands. It was a lifetime experience that totally surpassed our expectations and we will be forever great up to Ryan and Christina and the rest of SYMG!
